At a New Year's Day feast in Camelot, a mysterious Green Knight challenges any knight to strike him in return for a promise to take a similar blow from the Green Knight the next year.
Young Gawain, true to his knightly code of honor, though a bit naive, accepts the challenge and beheads and fells the Green Knight who, nevertheless, arises to remind Gawain of his commitment.
A year later, Gawain embarks on his quest for The Green Knight, but becomes entangled with a forest lord who engages Gawain in a playful, but sly, game of exchanges, while Gawain fends off amorous advances from the lord's wife and quietly becomes enamored with a young lady of the household.
Gawain extricates himself and proceeds to his destiny with The Green Knight amid revelations and enlightenments that we all can embrace.
